“Delivering Persuasive Oral Argument: A View from the Solicitor General’s Office,” CLE will kick-off with a brief Q and A "View from the Bench" with the Honorable Leslie SteinThe CLE program presented by Victor Paladino and Brian Ginsberg of the New York State Solicitor General’s Office have presented nearly 400 appellate oral arguments between them.

The presentation uses video clips of actual New York Court of Appeals arguments given by accomplished appellate advocates in order to convey a variety of oral-argument success strategies, including tips on how to formulate an effective introductory statement, find the right verbal tone, use hand gestures appropriately, deliver an effective closing, and a variety of pointers regarding the paramount task of handling questions from the bench. To convey these strategies, Paladino and Ginsberg introduce each video clip, play the clip, and then lead a brief—but spirited—discussion with the audience afterwards. Written materials, which address oral-advocacy techniques that are less amenable to the video-and-discussion format, are also distributed.
