The Continuing Legal Education Board has approved mandatory continuing legal education for all attorneys practicing in New York, beginning December 31, 1998. Under the program, all attorneys admitted to the New York State Bar who practice law in NY will be required to complete a minimum of 24 hours of accredited continuing legal education courses over a two year period: twenty (20) hours of skills, law practice management or areas of practice; and at least four (4) hours of ethics and professionalism.

NEWLY ADMITTED ATTORNEYS, are required to complete a minimum of 32 credit hours of accredited transitional education within the first two (2) years of admission to the Bar. Sixteen (16) accredited hours shall be completed in each of the first two (2) years: three (3) hours of ethics and professionalism; six (6) hours of skills; and seven (7) hours of practice management and areas of professional practice.

LAWYERS WHO PRACTICE outside of New York will be required to certify compliance with the CLE requirements of the jurisdiction in which they practice. Additional copies of the proposed program rules can be obtained from the Unified Court System website (http://www.courts.state.ny.us/) or by calling the NYS Continuing Legal Education Board at (212) 428-2105.

The Albany County Bar Association has been certified by the NYS Continuing Legal Education Board as an Accredited Provider of CLE in the State of New York. We have also been given approval to provide non-traditional CLE format courses such as Video-taping, Audio-taping and group attendance. Certificates will be distributed at the seminars as proof of your attendance. They will also be distributed after the affirmation is received for the CD’s. Compliance with the certification requirement will be filed with your biennial registration. If you lose or misplace your certificate, there will be a $5 fee to reissue it. Detailed speaker and agenda information to qualify ACBA CLE Programs in another state may be obtained after the seminar upon request by contacting the CLE Board.
